RE: Inclusion of Thatcher & Coco Chanel in list of Inspirational Women in collaboration event with History in Politics Since publicising the list of inspirational women yesterday for our collaborative event with History in Politics Society, we have had several messages rightfully questioning the inclusion of Margaret Thatcher and Coco Chanel on the list of inspirational women for whom we requested portraits to celebrate International Women's Day. Considering Durham's history as a former mining town, the impact of Thatcher's policies, as well as her homophobia, her inclusion was an error. Coco Chanel also had links to Nazis during the Nazi Occupation of Paris during WW2, so her inclusion was also extremely erroneous. They have both since been removed from the list and DUAS will be shortly posting a new set of slides and deleting the original one to reflect this when this list is finalised again. In the meantime, we will be keeping the original post up so people can access the details for submission. This post will be deleted as soon as we have a revised list and this is not an endorsement of the aforementioned figures in any way. We will not be accepting portraits for Coco Chanel or Margaret Thatcher. We can only apologise for any offence or insult to anyone in our community that this may have caused. This is no light matter and we have acted as quickly as possible to rectify the situation, and endeavour in the future to remain as inclusive as possible.
