Rufo capitalized on the fact that, given C.R.T.'s academic provenance, few Americans had heard of the concept. He argued that liberal educators, under the bland banner of 'diversity,' were manipulating students into thinking of America not as a vibrant champion of democracy but as a shameful embodiment of white supremacy.
(As he framed things, there were no in-between positions.) Rufo later called C.R.T. 'the perfect villain'--a term that 'connotes hostile, academic, divisive, race-obsessed, poisonous, elitist, anti-American views.'
Rufo found a receptive ear in President Donald Trump, who was already ranting about 'The 1619 Project,' the collection of Times Magazine essays in which slavery is placed at the heart of the nation's founding. On Twitter, Trump had warned that the Department of Education would defund any school whose classroom taught material from the project. Trump conferred with Rufo and banned federal agencies from conducting 'un-American propaganda training sessions' involving 'critical race theory' or 'white privilege.' Trump said that Black Lives Matter protests were proliferating not because of anger over police abuses but because of 'decades of left-wing indoctrination in our schools.' Establishing a '1776 Commission,' he urged 'patriotic moms and dads' to demand that schools stop feeding children 'hateful lies about this country.' (The American Historical Association condemned the Administration's eventual '1776 Report,' highlighting its many inaccuracies and arguing that it attempted to airbrush history and 'elevate ignorance about the past to a civic virtue.')
Nearly nine hundred school districts nationwide were soon targeted by anti- C.R.T. campaigns, many of which adopted language that closely echoed Trump's order not to teach material that made others 'feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress on account of his or her race or sex.' In some red states, the vague wording was enshrined as law. Republicans filed what became known as 'anti-C.R.T.' bills; they were seemingly cut and pasted from templates, with similarly phrased references to such terms as 'divisive concepts' and 'indoctrination.'
Williamson County Schools was uneventfully wrapping up its first term with Wit & Wisdom when, in early December, 2020, the American Legislative Exchange Council, which generates model legislation for right-leaning lawmakers, hosted a Webinar about 'reclaiming education and the American dream.' A representative of the Heritage Foundation, the conservative think tank, warned that elements of a 'Black Lives Matter curriculum' were 'now in our schools.' Rufo--correctly predicting that Joe Biden, then the President- elect, would abolish Trump's executive order--urged state legislators and governors to take up the fight.
Continuing the agitation wasn't just an act of fealty to Trump; it was cunning politics. The fear that C.R.T. would cause children to become fixated on race has resonated with enough voters to help tip important elections. Last November, Glenn Youngkin, a candidate for the governorship of Virginia, won an upset victory after repeatedly warning that the 'curriculum has gone haywire'--and promising to sign an executive order banning C.R.T. from schools. Jatia Wrighten, a political scientist at Virginia Commonwealth University, told the Washington Post that Youngkin had 'activated white women to vote in a very specific way that they feel like is protecting their children.'
Days after the alec Webinar on 'reclaiming education,' three women in Florida filed incorporation papers for Moms for Liberty, Inc., later declaring that their 'sole purpose' was to 'fight for parental rights' to choose what sort of education was best for their kids. One of the organization's founders, Tina Descovich--who had recently lost reëlection to the school board of Brevard County, Florida, after opposing pandemic safety protocols--soon appeared on Rush Limbaugh's show. Declaring plans to 'start with school boards and move on from there,' she said of like-minded parents, 'It sounds a little melodramatic, but there is evil working against us on a daily basis.' maga media--'Tucker Carlson Tonight,' Breitbart--showcased Moms for Liberty. Media Matters, the liberal watchdog, argued that influential right-wing media figures were essentially 'recruiting their eager audience' for the Moms' campaign.
Moms for Liberty, which is sometimes referred to as M4L or MFL, is so new that it is hard to parse, from public documents, what its leaders are getting paid. (The founders say that the chairs of local chapters are volunteers.) The group describes itself as a 'grassroots' organization, yet its instant absorption by the conservative mediasphere has led some critics to suspect it of being an Astroturf group--an operation secretly funded by moneyed interests. #NewspaperUKBrdshtTheTimesMelaniePhillips "The outspoken state school head and former social mobility tsar Katharine Birbalsingh has been making waves again, this time over independent schools.
In an essay for an updated edition of a book called The State of Independence, she writes that in recent years these schools - particularly the most prestigious ones - have embraced the agenda of identity politics. Independent schools, she says, are essential in the great battle for traditionalism. Parents who send their children to such schools still believe this is precisely what they are buying. No longer.
The significant change came about, Birbalsingh says, after the emergence of Black Lives Matter and the dominance of identity politics in the progressive circles where many, if not most, teachers make their ideological home.
In another essay in this book Claire Fox, the one-time Marxist turned libertarian turned baroness, who is herself a former teacher, endorses this observation. Fox writes that 'woke ideology is increasingly what is being taught at the highest levels of private schooling'. This, she suggests, may explain why so many leading 'social justice warriors' in the universities were themselves privately educated.
Eton, for example, has called for more gender intelligence and invited the founder of the Everyday Sexism Project to lecture pupils. Rugby School has introduced post-doctoral bursaries to explore 'the historical intersection between schools, class and colonialism'. An unidentified school founded in the 16th century and charging more than £35,000 per year, writes Fox, has trained its staff in 'unconscious bias', gives lessons in 'micro-aggressions and stereotyping' and has told department heads to ensure that 'black British history influences curricular development'. Birbalsingh says the grip that all this has exercised can't be explained without grasping the impact of 'child-centred' education. This maintains that the child is the principal driver of his or her education experience, with the teacher relegated to a back-seat role. As a result structured teaching, discipline and adult authority in school go down the drain.
Birbalsingh says that this plays out far worse in independent schools because it combines with the guilt of the privileged. Not only are these pupils drawn overwhelmingly from the upper social strata, but many of the teachers were themselves privately educated. They make themselves feel better, she says, by embracing ideologies that tell them they are empowering their students to address the perceived injustices of the world.
Such schools no longer inspire their pupils to repay their privileged upbringing through public service. Instead, they 'follow the children's leadership' by embracing causes fashionable among the young which will secure the teacher's position as a 'good person'. This helps explain why transgender is being pushed by so many posh girls' schools, regardless of the damage it is doing to individual girls and to women's rights.
In America, the extent of this cultural self-flagellation in its most elite high schools has provoked some parents to take their children away. One such New York parent wrote that schools such as Brearley, from where he was removing his daughter, were supposed to be the training grounds for America's leaders.
In a letter to all Brearley parents, he wrote: 'Our nation will not survive a generation of leadership even more poorly educated than we have now, nor will we survive a generation of students taught to hate its own country and despise its history.'
In my 1996 book, All Must Have Prizes, drawing on my own perceptions of what was being taught in both state and independent schools and the evidence from teachers and educationists, I wrote about the catastrophic effects of child-centred education. The fact that I was denounced by virtually the entire education establishment proved my point that this had become an unchallengeable orthodoxy. At the same time, I received huge support from parents - and from dissident teachers who privately expressed their despair that the very understanding of education as the transmission of a culture was being destroyed, and along with it the life chances of the most vulnerable children.
Birbalsingh, whose educational philosophy runs headlong against this, heads one of the most successful state schools in Britain in one of its most culturally diverse and challenging areas. Yet she is demonised as 'right-wing' - that adults brainless insult that tells you so spend much about the person reflexively hurling it at those with whom they disagree.
These devastating observations about independent schools shouldn't be brushed aside as of marginal importance. Such schools may educate a small minority but they in effect set down markers for education that lead the culture.
For years, they have been under increasingly vituperative attack for small doing so. Now it turns out they have abandoned that role and have chosen to be led by children instead.
Birbalsingh stood down as head of the Social Mobility Commission because of the impossibility of telling home truths to a wider culture that seems to regard these as micro-aggressions.
In her essay, which she wrote last summer while she was still at the commission, she likens independent schools to an iceberg that has melted so much that it topples in on itself. "Woke in its initial inception meant political consciousness for Black people about the histories of anti-Blackness in this [USA] country and globally rather than this kind of more generalised political consciousness that it came to take up. One thing that I think is a very common misunderstanding about woke is the idea that it was derived from this phrase 'stay woke'. Woke itself is a standalone word. It's a word that conforms to the syntactic and phonological, which is to say that the sound system and grammatical principles, of African American English which has its origins in the South. 'Awake' is synonymous with 'woke' right, so one might say, 'I was woke about, let's say 7am'. The idea of 'wakefulness' as a concept referring to political consciousness stretches as far back as 1923, and then we see it going all the way up through the 1980s. Marcus Garvey in 'The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey' in the frame of what we might think of as black nationalist tradition where he says, 'wake up Ethiopia, wake up Africa, let us work towards the one end of a glorious and redeemed and mighty nation', he's talking about political consciousness in the same way as Laurence Fishburne's character at the end of 'School Daze' in the 1980s film. In 1962, a New York Times article by a guy named [William] Melvin Kelley 'If You're Woke You Dig It' writing about cultural appropriation and linguistic appropriation of Black language and culture by white people, specifically. As early as the 1990s or the late 1980s, you see it more attached to the idea of 'political correctness'. This is the point of which white people I would suggest, begin using it reflexively. And so it doesn't now just have the meaning of thinking about anti-Blackness from the perspective of someone who experiences it. More now it refers to this more general sense of awareness, as a marker of general political consciousness attention to such issues as those environmental, feminists, regarding ability and so on. Childish Gambino's song 'Redbone', canonised the phrase 'stay woke' for a popular audience. While Childish Gambino might understand that 'wokeness', at least in its original inception, has a lot to do with our awareness of anti-Black oppression. Listeners to the song from a variety of demographics all over the world aren't abreast of that history and now are using it, the phrase, in a way that destroys its meaning. But it has also been taken up more recently by conservatives. And it became used in a negative or pejorative fashion, right or at least one that is mocking or sarcastic. In fact, it's a well-known and popular tactic of conservatives to pick up and shift the meanings of individual terms, to then weaponize them. Mark Milley and Matt Gaetz arguing about what's woke and what isn't, whether it's good or whether it's bad, where that has nothing to do with the case of the Scottsboro Boys or Emmett Till or Trayvon Martin or Sandra Bland or Rodney King or Ahmaud Arbery or Breonna Taylor or George Floyd. I'm not suggesting that it's necessarily a conscious process, but it's the result of the kind of consumption of Black culture, which has always had a lot of capital purchase in the United States and pop culture globally." Cassino, the political scientist, thinks that like Donald Trump, Lahren may be both an example and beneficiary of a sea change in the way conservatives talk about race. 'There was an unspoken rule in the conservative movement for a long time, which they learned from Richard Nixon: you do not talk openly about race. It was seen as toxic to talk about it in anything but dog whistles.'
Twenty years ago, conservative commentators would talk in code about it, in terms of 'welfare', 'inner city crime', or 'family breakdown'. But in the last five to 10 years, Cassino says, 'it has become acceptable for conservatives to talk about race in concrete terms'.
The election of Obama, for example, led to arguments that talk of racial inequality was overblown, and eventually to criticisms of the president in terms of his racial identity. All of this precisely coincides with Lahren's formative political years.
Like Trump and many other conservatives, Lahren puts this change down to a weariness with political correctness. 'For too long, white people have been told that they can't talk about race, and that only some people of colour can talk about race. I don't buy that.'
She insists that she is not racist, but also that 'there can't be a group of people in this country who are blamed for the ills of minority communities and then not allowed to speak or defend themselves.'
This appeal to white grievances is similar to the one made by the Trump campaign. The canard is interesting in the way that it seeks to frame such supposed malevolent intent as a form of 'mind-control' (manipulation) where in their nativity, and having gone against sort of 'predefined natural, social order', such supposed 'white liberals' have received their ultimate punishment i.e. 'they deserve what's coming to them!'.
