"[Latent Homophobia and Racism In the early 1970s, when it appeared in New York nightclubs, disco was a niche genre, rooted in gay, Black, and Latino culture. Enough to send a horde of puritans running for the hills. But that night in 1979, at the stadium, it was primarily white men aged 18 to 34 who gathered to ignite the disco revolution. Peter Shapiro, author of the cult book on disco, *Turn the Beat Around* (published by Allia), explains the importance of context : 'The disco demolition party took place in the Midwest, which was then called the 'Rust Belt' because it was the industrial heartland of America. But the factories were dying. Disco, born from the gay and Black underground, represented a challenge to the image that John Wayne's America had of itself.' When the American government faced a crisis, disaffected white men laid off from manufacturing jobs felt alienated by disco. 1970s America also saw the rise of the culture wars (which we still experience today), and anti-gay activists like country singer Anita Bryant focused their attacks on disco. This music also brought a significant Black presence to the pop charts, which unsettled the predominantly white rock audience.]" #OtheringHateHomophobia #OtheringOutGroupRedneck #PhenomnDisco #ToponymAmericaNorthUSRustBelt [Wikipedia] #IRLJournalistPeterShapiro [Wikipedia] #2005_TurnTheBeatAroundTheSecretHistoryOfDisco #ToponymAmericaNorthUSMidwest [Wikipedia] #IRLActorJohnWayne #PhenomnAgencyHumanDisaffected #IdentityClassBlueCollar #IRLSingerAnitaBryant [Wikipedia] #MetaphorPeriodization1970s #IdentityLGBTQIA
