Because you haven't been paying enough attention to the fact that our nation's culture is not only created in our schools but that it is our children who are leading the development of that culture in our schools adult authority is long gone. So here I am ringing the alarm. In 20 years many of us will be retired or sadly dead, and the children in our schools will be in important and influential positions in our institutions. As G.K Chesterton said the true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him but because he loves what is behind him. Well, I'm asking how much do you love your country, how much do you love the values that you claim to defend? Do you love them enough to tweet under your own name do you love them enough to change your child's school to one that's less woke and ignore the impact on your social status? Do you love them enough to do more than simply chat to your friends who already agree with you at dinner parties. For Heaven's sake man, stand up and be counted! As Russell Crowe says in the film Gladiator (a clip I regularly play for my staff): 'Hold the line! Stay with me!... what we do in life... echoes in eternity. Ancient Greeks, Romans, and others displayed varieties of xenophobia, but almost always with an 'escape hatch' in conversion or assimilation. Slow movements toward essentialism in prejudices about European Jewry and Black Africans took place over centuries. While anti-Judaism had been part and parcel of Christianity almost from its inception, it wasn't until the 12th and 13th centuries that some began to speak about an insurmountable difference between Jews and Gentiles. And although the association of the color black with evil has long roots, it didn't translate everywhere into anti-Black sentiment. Spanish anti-Judaism started to include ideas about the purity of blood (limpieza de sangre) in the 14th and 15th centuries, framed in terms of whether someone was Christian or not, rather than in terms of white and nonwhite, but it stands as a historical 'segue between the religious intolerance of the Middle Ages and the naturalistic racism of the modern era,' writes historian and author George M. Fredrickson, in its incipient biologization of difference. Similarly, while it was never universally accepted, the so-called curse of Ham gradually connected Black Africans with Noah's son Ham, who was cursed by his father to be a servant. The curse was the basis for centuries of debate about the legitimacy of enslaving Black people; some used it to motivate enslavement, and others to oppose it." https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/a-prehistory-of-scientific-racism/ #MetaphorSpatialHierarchyScalaNaturaeGreatChainOfBeing #OtheringHateXenophobia #PolicyCulturalAssimilation #BeliefReligiousConversion [Wikipedia] #MetaphorPeriodizationClassicalAntiquity [Wikipedia] #OtheringHateAntisemitism #OtheringDiscriminationRacism #ToponymAfrica_ #BeliefTheismChristianity #MetaphorPeriodization12thCentury #MetaphorPeriodization13thCentury #MetaphorPurityRace #MetaphorPeriodizationMiddleAges #IRLAuthorGeorgeFredrickson #PhenomnBiologization #BeliefTheismChristianityBibleOTBookOfGenesis [Wikipedia] #MetaphorNoahsArk #PowerControlChattelSlavery #BehaviourNormalisation

Because if you are in any serious way concerned about the future, you're also concerned about Thiel, a canary in capitalism's coal mine... ...he didn't like how they wrote about him; he is known for his public musings about the incompatibility of freedom and democracy, and for expressing interest - as though enthusiastically pursuing the clunkiest possible metaphor for capitalism at its most vampiric - in a therapy involving transfusions of blood from young people as a potential means of reversing the ageing process. But in another, deeper sense, he is pure symbol: less a person than a shell company for a diversified portfolio of anxieties about the future, a human emblem of the moral vortex at the centre of the market. And the overwhelming suspicion was that he was looking for a rampart to which he could retreat in the event of outright civilisational collapse. Because this is the role that New Zealand now plays in our unfurling cultural fever dream: an island haven amid a rising tide of apocalyptic unease." https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/feb/15/why-silicon-valley-billionaires-are-prepping-for-the-apocalypse-in-new-zealand #OtheringOutGroupPrepperSurvivalist #ToponymOceaniaNewZealand #BrandOpenAISamAltman #NarrativeUtopiaEschatologyApocalypticism #NarrativeUtopia

In Sweden, where the present study was conducted, the concept of 'race' however is very rarely used and often seen as controversial in Swedish public discourse. In fact, with reference to the history of racial biology and eugenics, the concept of race is officially avoided and discarded (SOU 2015: 103). Instead, concepts like 'migrants,' 'migrant background' or 'ethnicity' are used as proxies for race in Swedish public discourse (Bredström & Mulinari 2022; Mattsson 2005). Despite this, these proxy terms are closely tied to an implicit notion of 'race,' and 'Swedishness' is intimately tied to racialized 'whiteness' (Hübinette & Lundström 2014; Mattsson 2005; Neergaard & Mulinari 2017)." https://journal-njmr.org/articles/10.33134/njmr.572 #TheoryProxyDiscourses #MetaphorPurityRace #ToponymEuropeNordicScandinaviaSweden

In other words you start out and -now ya'll don't quote me on this. You start out in 1954 by saying 'Nigger, nigger, nigger.' By 1968 you can't say 'Nigger,' that hurts you, it backfires. So you say stuff like, 'forced bussing,' 'states rights' and all that stuff. And you're getting so abstract now you're talking about 'cutting taxes' and all of these things you're talking about are totally economic things and the by-product of them is blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it, I'm not saying that. I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract and that coded then we're doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me? Context #MagazineHarpersBazaar "Our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial. Powerful protests for racial and social justice are leading to overdue demands for police reform, along with wider calls for greater equality and inclusion across our society, not least in higher education, journalism, philanthropy, and the arts. But this needed reckoning has also intensified a new set of moral attitudes and political commitments that tend to weaken our norms of open debate and toleration of differences in favor of ideological conformity. As we applaud the first development, we also raise our voices against the second. The forces of illiberalism are gaining strength throughout the world and have a powerful ally in Donald Trump, who represents a real threat to democracy. But resistance must not be allowed to harden into its own brand of dogma or coercion--which right-wing demagogues are already exploiting. The democratic inclusion we want can be achieved only if we speak out against the intolerant climate that has set in on all sides. The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted. While we have come to expect this on the radical right, censoriousness is also spreading more widely in our culture: an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty. We uphold the value of robust and even caustic counter-speech from all quarters. But it is now all too common to hear calls for swift and severe retribution in response to perceived transgressions of speech and thought. More troubling still, institutional leaders, in a spirit of panicked damage control, are delivering hasty and disproportionate punishments instead of considered reforms. Editors are fired for running controversial pieces; books are withdrawn for alleged inauthenticity; journalists are barred from writing on certain topics; professors are investigated for quoting works of literature in class; a researcher is fired for circulating a peer-reviewed academic study; and the heads of organizations are ousted for what are sometimes just clumsy mistakes. Whatever the arguments around each particular incident, the result has been to steadily narrow the boundaries of what can be said without the threat of reprisal. We are already paying the price in greater risk aversion among writers, artists, and journalists who fear for their livelihoods if they depart from the consensus, or even lack sufficient zeal in agreement. This stifling atmosphere will ultimately harm the most vital causes of our time. The restriction of debate, whether by a repressive government or an intolerant society, invariably hurts those who lack power and makes everyone less capable of democratic participation. The way to defeat bad ideas is by exposure, argument, and persuasion, not by trying to silence or wish them away. We refuse any false choice between justice and freedom, which cannot exist without each other. As writers we need a culture that leaves us room for experimentation, risk taking, and even mistakes. We need to preserve the possibility of good-faith disagreement without dire professional consequences. If we won't defend the very thing on which our work depends, we shouldn't expect the public or the state to defend it for us" (7 July #2020_). https://harpers.org/a-letter-on-justice-and-open-debate/

There is little doubt he would find modest race preference an acceptable, indeed necessary, curative." https://www.nlg.org/nlg-review/article/from-dog-whistle-to-megaphone-the-trump-regimes-cynical-assault-on-affirmative-action-2/ #JournalNLGReviewASocialJusticeLawJournalMarkSBrodin #PolicyAffirmativeActionDiscriminationPositive #TheoryRacialColourBlindnessContentOfTheirCharacter

#NewspaperUKBrdshtTheGuardianSteveRose "Like 'politically correct' before it, the word 'woke' has come to connote the opposite of what it means. Technically, going by the Merriam-Webster dictionary's definition, woke means 'aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)', but today we are more likely to see it being used as a stick with which to beat people who aspire to such values, often wielded by those who don't recognise how un-woke they are, or are proud of the fact ... as [Laurence] Fox and others [e.g. Toby Young] have shown, it is as much to do with the issues of racial and social justice. Criticising 'woke culture' has become a way of claiming victim status for yourself rather than acknowledging that more deserving others hold that status. It has gone from a virtue signal to a dog whistle. The language has been successfully co-opted - but as long as the underlying injustices remain, new words will emerge to describe them." Supplementary #MagazineNZTheSpinoffAliceNeville [Wikipedia] "The term political correctness as we know it emerged in the mid-80s - this Aussie social work lecturer at Victoria University was an early adopter - but didn't enter the mainstream consciousness in New Zealand until the 90s, ascending slowly but surely until it was absolutely everywhere by the turn of the millennium. With Helen Clark's government securing a second term in 2002, the war against PC hit its stride: National's shadow education minister Nick Smith was railing against the 'political correctness gone mad' of kapa haka being recognised in the NCEA, and for the next few years 'PC gone mad' went a bit, well, mad. According to Hansard, there were 250 mentions of 'politically correct', 139 mentions of 'political correctness' and 82 for 'PC' during parliamentary debates in the 2002-2005 term, which is as far back as online Hansard goes. (It's possible, I concede, that some of those 82 PCs were referencing the family computer.) 'Politically correct nonsense' was a phrase uttered 18 times and 'PC nonsense' 19 times during those three years, mainly, it would seem, by Nick Smith (social workers being required to learn about the Treaty, councils consulting with iwi, kava ceremonies for public servants, resource management reform and changes to the law around guardianship arrangements for kids were just a handful of his targets)." https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/19-05-2025/how-wokeism-cancelled-political-correctness #MetaphorPeriodization1980s #ToponymOceaniaAustralia #EDUNZVictoriaUniversityOfWellington #ToponymOceaniaNewZealand #OrgClassifPPNZNewZealandLabourPartyHelenClark #2002_ #OrgClassifPPNZNewZealandNationalPartyNickSmith #1840_TeTiritiOWaitangi [Wikipedia] #IdentityFirstNationsMaoriKinshipWhakapapa [Wikipedia] #IdentityFirstNationsMaoriIwi [Wikipedia] #OrgNZGovNZQANewZealandQualificationsAuthorityManaTohuMataurangaOAotearoa [Wikipedia] #OrgNZGovNZQANationalCertificateOfEducationalAchievementNCEA [Wikipedia] #OrgUKGovHansard

Addendum in this context is meant to symbolically send a message to other #ConspiracyTheory_CabalQAnon conspiracy theory-believers and Trump followers of some sort of 'truth' about Trump (through contrast with Obama). This kind of tweet could be seen as a #MetaphorDogWhistle to #CharacterisationTrumpsBase.

Addendum Trump represented as some sort of modern-day #BeliefTheismDeityGodAllahYHWHJesusChristMessiah / beacon of light in the 2020 US presidential race (although, apart from the #BeliefTheismChristianityCrucifix above Trump's name - I have no idea what the steam-train symbolism is meant to communicate - perhaps something about progress?). I can only assume that the train refers to #CatchcryTrumpTrain - using alliteration as part of some sort campaign slogan, where "Each tweet is referred to as a "train car" and sometimes the train cars have numbers. Users included in each train car tweet are called "riders" and there are "conductors" that organize each train and dedicate a great deal of their time on Twitter to this activity" (Erin Gallagher, 16 September 2019) https://medium.com/@erin_gallagher/trump-trains-84bea1c3170d "trains" can be used metaphorically to refer to coteries of support: [commentary] https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/04/what-the-end-of-the-mueller-report-means-for-qanon.html Mention of 'Train' in the Bible: [bible] #MetaphorBiblical #MetaphorWarfareHeroSaviour versus #MetaphorThreatGeneralisedNonSpecific #InvectiveBullShitBS #CatchcryEnoughIsEnough
