Is there now a far-right culture that is more prevalent in society and which transcends the need to organise in political groups? When reflecting this week, I thought back to a cold day in Preston in early January 2018. I was in court watching a defendant called Jack Renshaw, who was giving evidence in a trial that saw him convicted of stirring up racial hatred in antisemitic speeches. By the end of that year - and two further trials - he was also convicted of sexually grooming young boys and planning to kill his local MP with a machete in a neo-Nazi terror attack. I checked my notes and, yes, my memory had been correct. Renshaw, an admitted neo-Nazi and former member of the BNP and National Action, was asked why he engaged in racist activism. In response, he said it helped change politics for everyone. 'It makes mainstream politics more right wing,' he told the court. The reaction of the public, police and courts to the riots has shown how most people do not share the violent hatreds and fantasies of the far and extreme right. Middle-aged people are often bundled in with the 'over 50s' as a group, which includes the very old - a demographic with whom they have little in common. The middle aged are not 'digital natives' but they are online. And, crucially, they may actually be less informed about the dangers of online misinformation than younger people because they have not been the target of education in the same way. These days, significant effort is put in to educating young people about how to navigate the online world safely, but middle aged people missed the boat. The middle-aged were introduced to the internet as adults and their understanding of the online sphere is largely self-taught and self-regulated. As a result, they can be poor decision makers when it comes to what to consume and what to believe. By the end of that year - and two further trials - he was also convicted of sexually grooming young boys and planning to kill his local MP with a machete in a neo-Nazi terror attack. I checked my notes and, yes, my memory had been correct. Renshaw, an admitted neo-Nazi and former member of the BNP and National Action, was asked why he engaged in racist activism. In response, he said it helped change politics for everyone. 'It makes mainstream politics more right wing,' he told the court. The reaction of the public, police and courts to the riots has shown how most people do not share the violent hatreds and fantasies of the far and extreme right. The similarities between the political moments provide a rough model for how the new MAGA coalition might persist. In the original fusionism, communism was almost always a bigger deal than whatever libertarians and social conservatives didn't see eye to eye on. This worked because 'communism' never just meant one thing. It could be invoked to oppose the Soviet Union and the literal ideology of communism, to thwart the supposedly communist-infilitrated civil-rights and anti-war movements, or to refer to anything related to left-wing politics. Wokeness now serves that function on the right. It's no coincidence that wokeness is a rebranded version of the right's previous bogeyman: 'cultural Marxism.' The similarities between the political moments provide a rough model for how the new MAGA coalition might persist. In the original fusionism, communism was almost always a bigger deal than whatever libertarians and social conservatives didn't see eye to eye on. This worked because 'communism' never just meant one thing. It could be invoked to oppose the Soviet Union and the literal ideology of communism, to thwart the supposedly communist-infilitrated civil-rights and anti-war movements, or to refer to anything related to left-wing politics. Wokeness now serves that function on the right. It's no coincidence that wokeness is a rebranded version of the right's previous bogeyman: 'cultural Marxism.'
