Supplementary "All lobbying is advocacy, but not all advocacy is lobbying. The main difference between lobbying and advocacy is that lobbying indicates an opinion about specific legislative change (e.g., particular changes to specific laws). Lobbying is always allowed as a private citizen, but researchers should be cautious about using resources (e.g., paid time, grant funded travel) to lobby whilst in a professional capacity. This restriction is related to what resources are used for lobbying - thus the amount of time used is the focus of any required reporting for tax-exempt organizations." https://research2policy.org/advocacyvlobbying/ #PhenomnPolicymakingPoliticalAdvocacyLobbyingThinkTankPressureGroup Hasan, Md Rahat. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition. ... What happened? Of course, there were larger forces at work beyond the realignment of the South. They included the mobilization of social conservatives after the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, the anti-tax movement launched in 1978 by California's Proposition 13, the rise of conservative talk radio after a congressional pay raise in 1989, and the emergence of Fox News and right-wing blogs. But the real move to the bedrock right starts with two names: Newt Gingrich and Grover Norquist. From the day he entered Congress in 1979, Gingrich had a strategy to create a Republican majority in the House: convincing voters that the institution was so corrupt that anyone would be better than the incumbents, especially those in the Democratic majority. It took him 16 years, but by bringing ethics charges against Democratic leaders; provoking them into overreactions that enraged Republicans and united them to vote against Democratic initiatives; exploiting scandals to create even more public disgust with politicians; and then recruiting GOP candidates around the country to run against Washington, Democrats and Congress, Gingrich accomplished his goal. ... The GOP's evolution has become too much for some longtime Republicans. Former senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska called his party 'irresponsible' in an interview with the Financial Times in August, at the height of the debt-ceiling battle. 'I think the Republican Party is captive to political movements that are very ideological, that are very narrow,' he said. 'I've never seen so much intolerance as I see today in American politics.' And Mike Lofgren, a veteran Republican congressional staffer, wrote an anguished diatribe last year about why he was ending his career on the Hill after nearly three decades. 'The Republican Party is becoming less and less like a traditional political party in a representative democracy and becoming more like an apocalyptic cult, or one of the intensely ideological authoritarian parties of 20th century Europe,' he wrote on the Truthout Web site. Shortly before Rep. West went off the rails with his accusations of communism in the Democratic Party, political scientists Keith Poole and Howard Rosenthal, who have long tracked historical trends in political polarization, said their studies of congressional votes found that Republicans are now more conservative than they have been in more than a century. Their data show a dramatic uptick in polarization, mostly caused by the sharp rightward move of the GOP." https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/lets-just-say-it-the-republicans-are-the-problem/2012/04/27/gIQAxCVUlT_story.html And [digital archives] And https://www.aei.org/articles/ive-witnessed-the-decline-of-the-republican-party/ #AdvocacyUSAmericansForTaxReformATRGroverNorquist #1973_RoeVersusWade

Addendum #WebsiteHuffPostLeeMoran "Longtime political scientist Norman Ornstein on Wednesday explained why he believes the 2024 election is likely to go down as 'the most significant and most destructive' in America's history. The United States has previously chosen 'bad' and 'incompetent' presidents, Ornstein acknowledged to Zeteo's Mehdi Hasan. But, reflecting on Donald Trump's victory, Ornstein pointed out that 'we have not elected a president who has made clear during the campaign that he will be a dictator on day one and will destroy or shred the Constitution to whatever degree he feels it is necessary.' 'Even worse,' continued the emeritus scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute think tank, are Trump's 'enablers around him from the Supreme Court through the other institutions.' 'My fear is not just Donald Trump, it is that the guardrails we have built up over two and a half centuries are not going to hold,' he added. Later, Ornstein expressed his concerns that normal restraints on Trump just don't exist. 'Maybe the worst won't happen, but it's going to be damn close,' he warned." https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/norman-ornstein-2024-election-donald-trump-win_n_672c87e5e4b01cfbdad3d9b4 #VlogZeteoUnfilteredMehdiHasan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aWc43M6q8E&t=56s #IRLSecurityAdvisorOliviaTroye #PoliticsAuthoritarianismDictatorship #2024_USPresidentialElection #OrgUSFedAFMArmyMichaelFlynn #IRLPoliticalStrategistSteveBannon #BrandAmazonJeffBezos #BrandTechMetaMarkZuckerberg #BrandFDRLSTMediaTheFederalistSteveMiller #IRLEntrepreneurElonMusk #PowerControlRegulationDeportation #OrgClassifPPUSDemocraticPartyKamalaHarris #OtheringElitesLiberalCulturalEducated #AdvocacyUSChildrensHealthDefenseRobertFKennedyRFKJr #OrgUSFedCentersForDiseaseControlAndPreventionCDC #OrgUSFedFoodAndDrugAdministrationFDA #OrgUSNtlInstitutesOfHealthNIH #OrgUSFedNationalWeatherService #BehaviourSchadenfreude #OrgClassifPPUSRepublicanPartyGOPLizCheney #ReasoningFallacyBiasPartisanship

But on 22 December, Good Law Project claimed it received leaked emails showing that a PR company called Topham Guerin was planning to discredit them, on behalf of Palantir, which wants that NHS data. Good Law Project believes social media influencers have been asked by Topham Guerin what their 'fee expectation' would be for sending two tweets criticising Good Law Project, while taking care not to mention Topham Guerin or link to Palantir. But if I was Topham Geurin, and I wanted to make Jolyon Maugham mad, I would try to get him to believe Palantir was paying for social media influencers to attack him. Is this deep-vein psyops stuff, or me overthinking everything? Topham Guerin's speciality is 'shitty memes'. #NewspaperUKBrdshtTheGuardianDanMilmo "Palantir, which draws its name from the powerful crystal balls deployed in JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, is the favourite to win a £360m contract for the NHS's Federated Data Platform (FDP). Covering everything from individual patients' data to vaccination programmes, waiting lists and medical trials, the FDP will aggregate data from multiple sources and different formats on to a single platform. ... The ambitious scope of the platform has alarmed campaign groups, who fear for patient confidentiality, privacy and data security, but the identity of the frontrunner has also caused concern. US-based Palantir was co-founded by Peter Thiel, one of Silicon Valley's few high-profile Donald Trump supporters. The $15.6bn (£12.7bn) company has been criticised for its work with the US immigration agency, as well as its intelligence service and defence contracts. It already works closely with NHS England by providing software that processes data for a variety of purposes including take-up of Covid-19 vaccines and managing the post-pandemic bounce back in elective care (surgery or treatment booked in advance). But the prospect of it setting up an overarching data platform for NHS England has alarmed Foxglove, a UK legal campaign group that focuses on accountability in the technology industry. Foxglove's concerns, and those of similar organisations, centre on two aspects: the safety of patient data, and the nature of the company that will set up the data framework and seek to exploit it. ... The head of Palantir's London office is Louis Mosley, grandson of Oswald Mosley and nephew of the late former president of Formula One's governing body, Max Mosley, who became a privacy campaigner later in life. Speaking to the Sunday Times in 2020, Louis Mosley said Palantir's origins were as a defender of personal privacy. 'Palantir was actually started to guard against government overreach into personal privacy. Much of the software we've built is to prove those kinds of protections.'" https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/jun/21/palantir-concerns-over-data-firm-poised-to-be-operating-system-of-nhs #IRLAuthorJRRTolkien #1954_TheLordOfTheRings #BrandTechNHSFederatedDataPlatformNHSFDP [Wikipedia] #LiteralHealthcare #ToponymAmericaNorthUSCaliforniaNorthernSiliconValley #PhenomnPrivacyConfidentiality #ConditionVirusCOVID19 #AdvocacyUKFoxgloveLegal https://www.foxglove.org.uk/who-we-are/ [pdf] #JournalBritishMedicalJournalBMJ 'A controversial new federated data platform for the NHS in England', BMJ 2023; 383 (Published 29 November 2023).
