#NewspaperUKBrdshtTheIndependentMayaOppenheim "Chomsky, a prominent voice on the left, has now voiced his frustrations with antifa, telling The Independent that physically preventing members of far-right groups from expressing their views is counter-productive.
'Antifa is very far from a structured organisation. It is largely a collection of people disturbed about the ugly and ominous forces that have broken into the public arena with particular venom since Trump removed the cork from the bottle,' the 89-year-old says.
'Associated with the loose antifa array are fringe groups that have initiated the use of force in ways that are completely unacceptable and are a welcome gift to the far right and the repressive forces of the state, while also providing some justification for the absurd claim that antifa is comparable to the far-right forces.'
Chomsky argues that violence paves the way for state actions reminiscent of Cointelpro (acronym for Counter Intelligence Programme), which he describes as 'the most extreme domestic state-terrorist programme in US history'.
This is a reference to a series of covert and often illegal projects carried out by the FBI aimed at scrutinising, infiltrating and disrupting political organisations. The anti-Vietnam war movement, which Chomsky played a key role in, and the Civil Rights movement were subject to such measures" (10 December 2017). https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/noam-chomsky-antifa-us-alt-right-us-state-donald-trump-white-nationalist-a8044526.html #IRLScholarNoamChomsky #OrgUSFedFBICounterIntelligenceProgrammeCoIntelPro i.e. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COINTELPRO

It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition. ...
What happened? Of course, there were larger forces at work beyond the realignment of the South. They included the mobilization of social conservatives after the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, the anti-tax movement launched in 1978 by California's Proposition 13, the rise of conservative talk radio after a congressional pay raise in 1989, and the emergence of Fox News and right-wing blogs. But the real move to the bedrock right starts with two names: Newt Gingrich and Grover Norquist.
From the day he entered Congress in 1979, Gingrich had a strategy to create a Republican majority in the House: convincing voters that the institution was so corrupt that anyone would be better than the incumbents, especially those in the Democratic majority. It took him 16 years, but by bringing ethics charges against Democratic leaders; provoking them into overreactions that enraged Republicans and united them to vote against Democratic initiatives; exploiting scandals to create even more public disgust with politicians; and then recruiting GOP candidates around the country to run against Washington, Democrats and Congress, Gingrich accomplished his goal. ...
The GOP's evolution has become too much for some longtime Republicans. Former senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska called his party 'irresponsible' in an interview with the Financial Times in August, at the height of the debt-ceiling battle. 'I think the Republican Party is captive to political movements that are very ideological, that are very narrow,' he said. 'I've never seen so much intolerance as I see today in American politics.'
And Mike Lofgren, a veteran Republican congressional staffer, wrote an anguished diatribe last year about why he was ending his career on the Hill after nearly three decades. 'The Republican Party is becoming less and less like a traditional political party in a representative democracy and becoming more like an apocalyptic cult, or one of the intensely ideological authoritarian parties of 20th century Europe,' he wrote on the Truthout Web site.
Shortly before Rep. West went off the rails with his accusations of communism in the Democratic Party, political scientists Keith Poole and Howard Rosenthal, who have long tracked historical trends in political polarization, said their studies of congressional votes found that Republicans are now more conservative than they have been in more than a century. Their data show a dramatic uptick in polarization, mostly caused by the sharp rightward move of the GOP." https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/lets-just-say-it-the-republicans-are-the-problem/2012/04/27/gIQAxCVUlT_story.html And https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/08/decline-gop/614983/ And https://www.aei.org/articles/ive-witnessed-the-decline-of-the-republican-party/ #AdvocacyUSAmericansForTaxReformATRGroverNorquist #1973_RoeVersusWade

Addendum: #WebsiteHuffPostLeeMoran "Longtime political scientist Norman Ornstein on Wednesday explained why he believes the 2024 election is likely to go down as 'the most significant and most destructive' in America's history.
The United States has previously chosen 'bad' and 'incompetent' presidents, Ornstein acknowledged to Zeteo's Mehdi Hasan.
But, reflecting on Donald Trump's victory, Ornstein pointed out that 'we have not elected a president who has made clear during the campaign that he will be a dictator on day one and will destroy or shred the Constitution to whatever degree he feels it is necessary.'
'Even worse,' continued the emeritus scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute think tank, are Trump's 'enablers around him from the Supreme Court through the other institutions.'
'My fear is not just Donald Trump, it is that the guardrails we have built up over two and a half centuries are not going to hold,' he added.
Later, Ornstein expressed his concerns that normal restraints on Trump just don't exist. 'Maybe the worst won't happen, but it's going to be damn close,' he warned." https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/norman-ornstein-2024-election-donald-trump-win_n_672c87e5e4b01cfbdad3d9b4 #IRLJournalistMehdiHasan #VlogZeteo

WOKE FOR A DAY
U P AND DOWN the country, from Lands End to John O'Groats, as well as across the width of it, from Lowestoff Ness to Ardnamurchan Point, we've all wondered what it would be like to be Woke For A Day. If we found ourselves inexplicably transformed into a treasonous Marxist do-gooder, hell-bent on dismantling proud traditions such as racism, sexism and homophobia, how would we spend 24 hours? And this quandary doesn't just plague the average Joe in the street - it also haunts the arsehole celebrity set, too. We phoned three of our favourite anti-woke bellends and asked them: What would YOU do if you went Woke For A Day?
Laurence Fox, arsehole failed actor
AS AN ANTI-WOKE firebrand, I steadfastly refuse to kneel, due to kneeling's toxic association with the Stalinist BlackLivesMatter movement. So if I went Woke For A Day, I'd take the opportunity to do all the kneeling-based chores I haven't been able to perform for the last few years - such as tying my shoelaces and fixing that leak under the sink. If I had any time left after that, I'd probably have fun doing a few other knee-centric activities, such as weeding the garden or pretending to be a child by shuffling about with my shoes on my knees. Context: #MagazineHarpersBazaar "Our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial. Powerful protests for racial and social justice are leading to overdue demands for police reform, along with wider calls for greater equality and inclusion across our society, not least in higher education, journalism, philanthropy, and the arts. But this needed reckoning has also intensified a new set of moral attitudes and political commitments that tend to weaken our norms of open debate and toleration of differences in favor of ideological conformity. As we applaud the first development, we also raise our voices against the second. The forces of illiberalism are gaining strength throughout the world and have a powerful ally in Donald Trump, who represents a real threat to democracy. But resistance must not be allowed to harden into its own brand of dogma or coercion--which right-wing demagogues are already exploiting. The democratic inclusion we want can be achieved only if we speak out against the intolerant climate that has set in on all sides.
The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted. While we have come to expect this on the radical right, censoriousness is also spreading more widely in our culture: an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty. We uphold the value of robust and even caustic counter-speech from all quarters. But it is now all too common to hear calls for swift and severe retribution in response to perceived transgressions of speech and thought. More troubling still, institutional leaders, in a spirit of panicked damage control, are delivering hasty and disproportionate punishments instead of considered reforms. Editors are fired for running controversial pieces; books are withdrawn for alleged inauthenticity; journalists are barred from writing on certain topics; professors are investigated for quoting works of literature in class; a researcher is fired for circulating a peer-reviewed academic study; and the heads of organizations are ousted for what are sometimes just clumsy mistakes. Whatever the arguments around each particular incident, the result has been to steadily narrow the boundaries of what can be said without the threat of reprisal. We are already paying the price in greater risk aversion among writers, artists, and journalists who fear for their livelihoods if they depart from the consensus, or even lack sufficient zeal in agreement.
This stifling atmosphere will ultimately harm the most vital causes of our time. The restriction of debate, whether by a repressive government or an intolerant society, invariably hurts those who lack power and makes everyone less capable of democratic participation. The way to defeat bad ideas is by exposure, argument, and persuasion, not by trying to silence or wish them away. We refuse any false choice between justice and freedom, which cannot exist without each other. As writers we need a culture that leaves us room for experimentation, risk taking, and even mistakes. We need to preserve the possibility of good-faith disagreement without dire professional consequences. If we won't defend the very thing on which our work depends, we shouldn't expect the public or the state to defend it for us" (7 July #2020_). https://harpers.org/a-letter-on-justice-and-open-debate/
Supplementary: #EDUUSUniversityOfCaliforniaUCLABerkeleyJohnPowell "These strategies, combined called the 'Southern Strategy', was designed to create a national Republican majority, built, in part, on white resentment.
The dog whistle worked because it was heard and understood by the conservative white base, yet not by more moderate and northern whites. It meant activating racial resentment for one part of the population while denying that fact to the rest. The Southern Strategy married the conservative politics antipathy to marginal tax rates and civil rights, labor, and environmental regulations of corporate elites with culturally conservative antipathy towards civil rights, women's rights, and gay rights." https://belonging.berkeley.edu/new-southern-strategy #IRLCommentatorKevinPhillips and #EventRepublicanNationalConventionRNC Chairman #IRLHistoricalFigureLeeAtwater #MetaphorDogWhistle
