Supplementary "People are suddenly very concerned about the perils of rewriting history. We must be vigilant, apparently, to the possibility that great swaths of the past will be forgotten or, worse, 'erased'. We must remain alert to the risk that our history will be 'whitewashed' - as if there were enough whitewash in the world - with the difficult, complex bits disappeared. Meanwhile, unaware of all the controversy he has caused, Edward Colston's statue lies peacefully at the bottom of Bristol harbour. Historians are not too worried at the threat posed by 'rewriting history'. This is because rewriting history is our occupation, our professional endeavour. We are constantly engaged in a process of re-evaluating the past and reinterpreting stories that we thought we knew. Despite what Leopold von Ranke - one of the pioneers of modern historical research - said, history is not only about finding out 'how it actually happened', but also about how we think about the past and our relationship to it. The past may be dead but history is alive, and it is constructed in the present." https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jun/10/rewriting-history-historians-statue-past #IRLHistoricalFigureEdwardColston #EpistemologySociallyConstructedKnowledge
Addendum sadly, while this article makes some interesting points about the perils of #TheoryDeterminismHistoricalPresentism i.e. interpreting the past according to present-day sensibilities, its so-called #MetaphorWarfareCulture frame follows the same uncritical 'cancel culture' script consistent with the majority of tweets contained within this archive. Perhaps, this might be worth reading to understand Furedi's fuller perspective: https://www.kent.ac.uk/news/kentlife/29654/new-frank-furedi-book-explores-the-origins-and-rise-of-the-culture-war-over-socialisation

Supplementary "Tim Cole, of the History Commission, said most people wanted 'something short and factual that explained what was absent and why'. 'On 13 November 1895, a statue of Edward Colston (1636-1721) was unveiled here celebrating him as a city benefactor.
In the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, the celebration of Colston was increasingly challenged given his prominent role in the enslavement of African people. On 7 June 2020, the statue was pulled down during Black Lives Matter protests and rolled into the harbour. Following consultation with the city in 2021, the statue entered the collections of Bristol City Council's museums. 2024'
He added: 'Most people in the city wished to see a plaque placed on the plinth briefly explaining what once stood here, why it was now empty, and what happened to the statue.' Bristol City Council planning officers have recommended that the planning committee approve the wording at a meeting on 10 April." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmmqqg47dvno #EDUUKUniversityOfBristolTimCole

Supplementary #NewspaperUKBrdshtTheGuardianGabyHinsliff "Trying to clarify what the UK public understands by the perennially slippery term 'woke', in 2022 the pollsters YouGov asked respondents how well it fitted various contemporary causes. The highest match - above trans rights, no-platforming people whose opinions you dislike, stronger action on climate change and the Black Lives Matter movement itself - was with removing historical statues associated with slavery, like that of Colston. Something about this combination of direct action against a highly symbolic target, and revisiting history through a modern social justice lens, meant that 61% considered it woke. For some, that was perhaps a compliment. But by 2022, a word briefly synonymous with enlightened liberal consciousness - borrowed from a phrase used as far back as the 1930s by black Americans, urging each other to 'stay woke'' to the threat of racial violence - was already becoming what the then Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon called 'a pejorative term of abuse'. The narrative that woke ultimately ate itself, becoming so shrill, sanctimonious and yet simultaneously brittle that a backlash was almost inevitable, has been building ever since it became clear Donald Trump was on course to win a second presidential term. Britain, with its newly elected Labour government, initially seemed sheltered from the prevailing winds. While corporate America scrambled to ditch diversity policies following Trump's victory, only 11% of British firms surveyed by the Institute of Directors planned similar changes." https://www.theguardian.com/news/2025/jun/10/how-does-woke-start-winning-again #2025_ #BrandYouGov #2022_ #TheoryLinguisticsSocioAfricanAmericanVernacularEnglishAAVE #OrgClassifPPUKScottishNationalPartySNPNicolaSturgeon #TauntSelfRighteousnessSanctimoniousness #PoliticsProgressivismBrittle #OrgClassifPPUSRepublicanPartyGOPPOTUSDonaldTrump47thPresident #OrgClassifPPUKLabour #TauntBigBusinessCorporateCorporations #PolicyDiversityEquityAndInclusionDEI

Supplementary #NMUKBBCChloeHarcombe "For hundreds of years, Edward Colston was celebrated and honoured by many in his home city of Bristol, but an anti-racism protest held in the city on 7 June 2020 changed that in the most dramatic way. The toppling of his statue five years ago today made headlines around the world, forcing Bristolians to examine the legacy of the 17th Century slave trader. ... He found wealth through his work and later became an official of the Royal African Company, which held the monopoly in Britain on slave trading. He is believed to have transported about 80,000 men, women and children from Africa to the Americas between 1672 and 1689. ... The beginning of the end for Colston's close relationship with Bristol began thousands of miles away in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on 25 May, 2020. Police were called to a grocery store to reports of a 46-year-old man allegedly paying for a pack of cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. That man was George Floyd. Former police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Mr Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes during his arrest. Mr Floyd's pleas of "I can't breathe" as he died sent shock waves around the world - including towards Bristol. Black Lives Matter protests sprung up across the world, calling for an end to racism and police brutality." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckg4ej8j41yo #ToponymAmericaNorthUSMinnesotaMinneapolis #2025_

the collection of images conflate violence and anarchy with legitimate #PhenomnProtestDemonstration. They serve to incite #TheoryAffectExpressionPanic through the use of a #ReasoningFallacyStrawman.
