Just as you could understand why an Armenian might not want to see a Turkish therapist, or a Palestinian might not feel comfortable opening up to an Israeli therapist. Well, the same applies to African-Americans or a Palestinian might not feel comfortable opening up to an and whites.
There is still a basic mistrust of any sort of white-run system that claims it can 'help' black people. We still remember the Tuskegee experiment, in which the 'doctors' told black share-croppers they were getting free health care, but in reality they were shooting them up with syphilis. Just as black folks saw how housing projects were hyped as a way to provide blacks with cheap, affordable housing but in reality served as a form of government-sponsored segregation. And let's not even get into how the community views police officers whose job it is to 'serve and protect' tax-paying African-American citizens. So yeah, we're still a little suspicious.
Because of this mistrust, the way black folks have dealt with their oppression over the years is to handle their business internally. Privately. In the community. Or better yet, in the family."
