Addendum Note, 'English' and not 'British' as the Scots and Welsh tend to revere their own national symbol in preference for the Lion i.e. the Scottish 'thistle', the Welsh red dragon, leek and daffodil. Because Northern Ireland was only partitioned in the 20th Century, their national symbols tend to be those derived from their shared history [Wikipedia]
