Context "August Borms is a well-known name from the Flemish Movement of the first half of the last century. Initially he committed himself to the Dutchification of Ghent University, but during the First World War he turned to so-called activism, which tried to realize Flemish demands through collaboration with the German occupier. For example, he is a member of the so-called Council of Flanders, a kind of parliament that negotiates with the occupying forces about an independent Flanders, without success. After the war, Borms was sentenced to death , which was commuted to life imprisonment in 1920. In prison he grew into an icon of the Flemish Movement. Eight years later, he is elected as a Member of Parliament in the so-called Borms election for the Flemish nationalist Front Party, but he cannot take up his parliamentary seat because he has been deprived of his political rights. The Front Party is committed to mercy for the activists. August Borms is released early in 1929. During the Second World War, he again becomes involved in the collaboration . He is, among other things, chairman of the Commission set up by the Germans that pays compensation to activists from the First World War. August Borms was sentenced to death again in 1945 and was executed a year later.
