De Staatsveiligheid telt bijna honderd salafistische organisaties in ons land, zowel moskeeën, religieuze centra als onderwijsinstellingen. De radicale stroming in de islam is in opmars, meldt De Tijd. [Radical Islam on the rise: nearly one hundred Salafist organizations in Belgium
State Security has identified nearly one hundred Salafist organizations in Belgium, including mosques, religious centres, and educational institutions. The radical movement within Islam is on the rise, De Tijd reports.
State Security has identified one or more disturbing factors at all of these organizations. They may have a Salafist imam preaching, their directors are Salafist, they are funded by a Salafist organization, or some of their visitors are Salafist.
No figures are kept on how many Salafist organizations are added each year. However, 'in Belgium, an increase in groups and initiatives linked to Salafism is indeed being observed,' State Security reports, citing answers given by Justice Minister Koen Geens (CD&V) to questions from Open VLD Senator Lionel Bajart. 'A very small minority'
At the same time, State Security qualifies these findings. While the overproduction of Salafist messages online does give this movement greater visibility than the moderate voices within Islam, it remains a very small minority compared to the total Muslim population in our country.
Minister Geens emphasizes that radicalization is not unique to the Muslim world, and that Salafists are not necessarily jihadists. 'They are a minority.' According to Geens, it is, however, 'a phenomenon we must monitor,' he said on Radio 1's 'De Ochtend.' 'Of course, we must keep a very close eye on the funding, and State Security is doing that.']"
