Manet's masterpiece, A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, has been reinterpreted with a new label which suggests that the painting has an 'unsettling' quality, because of the presence of a man on the canvas.
The 1882 work depicts a barmaid staring out at the viewer of the painting and - in a mirrored image - towards a male patron of the eponymous Folies-Bergère (a Parisian cabaret club) who returns her gaze.
The masterpiece has been relabelled to suggest the presence of a man gives it an 'unsettling quality'

The female subject's 'enigmatic expression is unsettling', a new information panel states, 'especially as she appears to be interacting with a male customer'.
