Lead Belly, uses the phrase near the end of the recording of his 1938 song 'Scottsboro Boys', which tells the story of nine black teenagers accused of raping two white women, saying: 'I advise everybody, be a little careful when they go along through there-best stay woke, keep their eyes open'. Its popularity seems to stem from a conservative world-view that 'things' have gone too far - that everyone is needlessly worrying about 'issues' such as 'virtue signalling', 'social justice', 'environmentalism' etc. when none of it is that important and are really just another fad, which will soon pass. And we can all get back to how things were (in the good ol' days)...
