Addendum This is clearly a #TheoryBiasPresentShortTermism.ist analysis, i.e. while there might be an initial advantage to completing an apprenticeship rather than an undergraduate, arts degree it's worth considering the same scenario 10, 15, 20 years into the future where Joe is still plugging away at his linesman job, and Jim is now considerably further up the career ladder - earning considerably more.
