"Trump appointed Mizelle to the federal bench in late 2020 over objections from the American Bar Association that she had not been practicing law long enough to be qualified. A search of her other rulings found she had never previously applied corpus linguistics.

In response to the new disclosure, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee who chairs the subcommittee on federal courts and oversight, called for more disclosure surrounding when judges attend ideological educational retreats.
'The multi-pronged billionaire-funded scheme to influence the judiciary includes flying amenable judges to luxury resorts to bathe them in the latest fantastical right-wing legal theories,' he said in a statement to HuffPost. 'At the very least, the public ought to know when judges are attending lavish 'seminars' promoting the agenda of partisan special interests. The Judicial Conference should take a close look at tightening its rules to ensure transparency around such junkets.'
Legal corpus linguistics is not inherently ideological. Nevertheless, as the right-wing legal movement increasingly insists that courts must interpret the law based on 'history and tradition,' conservatives have seized on corpus linguistics as a useful source of legitimacy.
'History,' as described by the conservatives who dominate the federal courts these days, has an uncanny way of mirroring the political beliefs of the modern GOP on issues like gun laws, school prayer, organized labor and abortion rights. Corpus linguistics, the thinking goes, with its air of big data, offers a potential retort to the accusations that judges are simply cherry-picking their view of the past.
But skeptics argue that it's just as easy for an ideologically motivated judge to cherry-pick results from a search engine.
'A lot of what legal corpus work tends to do is allow you to pick and choose your history,' Anya Bernstein, a professor studying legal interpretation at the University of Connecticut School of Law who has written critically of legal corpus linguistics, told HuffPost in March. It took him 16 years, but by bringing ethics charges against Democratic leaders; provoking them into overreactions that enraged Republicans and united them to vote against Democratic initiatives; exploiting scandals to create even more public disgust with politicians; and then recruiting GOP candidates around the country to run against Washington, Democrats and Congress, Gingrich accomplished his goal. ...
The GOP's evolution has become too much for some longtime Republicans. Former senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska called his party 'irresponsible' in an interview with the Financial Times in August, at the height of the debt-ceiling battle. 'I think the Republican Party is captive to political movements that are very ideological, that are very narrow,' he said. 'I've never seen so much intolerance as I see today in American politics.'
And Mike Lofgren, a veteran Republican congressional staffer, wrote an anguished diatribe last year about why he was ending his career on the Hill after nearly three decades. "bilateral agreements with more than 100 countries to enhance 'connectivity' by building infrastructure projects and deepening economic ties. In the run-up to the event, many critics have highlighted the projects' negative impacts on host countries, such as debt traps, land seizures, corruption and environmental degradation. Some have pointed out the difficulties of establishing fair methods for resolving the many disputes that are arising between China and its new partners. A few have criticized the failure of certain projects to create adequate jobs for locals.
But one group of victims is often overlooked: the Chinese workers dispatched overseas to build these projects. If discussed at all, these migrant workers are generally demonized as the infantry 'invading' the host country and 'stealing' local jobs. In reality, they are extremely vulnerable to exploitation by their employers, sometimes even more so than their local co-workers.
The International Labor Organization reports that there are 14.2 million people in forced-labor situations worldwide and that indebted migrant workers are particularly vulnerable. Overseas Chinese workers are no exception.
The recent federal criminal conviction of a Chinese construction firm executive for subjecting workers in New York to forced labor is a case in point. According to trial testimony, prior to leaving China, the workers signed contracts promising to not interact with locals, to not leave their residence without permission and to return to China after completing their multi-year assignment -- at which point the bulk of their salary would be paid. Each worker was required to post a security deposit of more than $20,000 [USD] to guarantee his compliance. Once in New York, workers' passports were seized and they were required to work long hours and live in unsafe conditions. The Three Percenters movement is a loosely organized movement of gun owners. Founded by Michael Vanderboegh in 2008. The Three Percenters Club was founded by Michael Graham III. Closely related to the Oath Keepers. The name Three Percenters stems from the disputed claim that only 3% of American colonists took up arms against the British. The group, which sees itself as a lineal descendant of those early American patriots, has grown since President Obama took office, according to the Anti-Defamation League, but its exact size remains unknown. Vanderboegh regularly blasts opposition to gun control laws as a leader of the Three Percenters, vowing never to surrender any arms on his Sipsey Street Irregulars blog. The Three Percenters have shown up at almost all of the major Patriot movement standoffs and armed camps in recent years, including the Bundy Ranch confrontation with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) agents in Nevada in April 2014; a Josephine County, Oregon dispute between miners and the BLM in April 2015; and a Lincoln, Montana dispute between miners and the BLM and Forest Service in July 2015. In Idaho, they have mobilized religious hatred and xenophobic hostility, organizing public rallies against Syrian refugee resettlement.8 The Idaho Three Percenters' organizing has inspired similar actions in California. Blackstone's stake in ETP through Harvest Fund also means that it owns a stake in the controversial Bayou Bridge Pipeline planned along the southern coast of Louisiana. Bayou Bridge will bring crude oil from a hub Nederland, Texas (which is connected to Dakota Access by the Energy Transfer Crude Oil Pipeline) to refineries in St. James parish, Louisiana. The pipeline, which is co-owned by ETP and Phillips 66, has inspired protests similar to those against Dakota Access as well as a lawsuit on behalf of the communities that will bear the brunt of the pipeline's negative impacts.
