Understand 'wokism' and refute it
for those who follow the unfortunately daily chronicle of its wanderings fairly closely, the 'woke' left has few secrets as its repetitive obsessions make its assaults predictable. Until recently, good conscience has been found to worry about Snow White's consent to her prince's kiss: irony is that this 'indignation' was previously imagined in parody form by facetious Internet users, even before that activists seize the scandal - to the first degree, this time. So if the reasons for his hives attacks, as well as his methods (which for a long time we believed confined to American campuses and which we nevertheless see with concern to come to us: culture of cancellation, hunt for witches, preference for 'non-mixed' inter-self ...), are already well known, it remained to understand the social, cultural and even psychological conditions of the success of 'wokism'. What is brilliantly tackling the young Pierre Valentin, who has just published on behalf of the Foundation for Political Innovation (Fondapol, think-tank) two remarkable notes on the origins of this movement and the reasons for its influence. The political science student first traces the origin of the word itself, which has only very recently taken a pejorative turn: appeared in an African-American R'n'B clip in 2008, the term ' woke 'was popularized and then taken up by many anti-racist activists in the United States and in particular those of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Thus, to remain 'woke' ('awake'), assure the supporters of this notion, is to be 'aware' of the perpetuation of patterns of domination calling for vigilance or even a permanent struggle. From this militant attitude, Pierre Valentin mercilessly dissects subterfuge and opportunism, relying to do this on the valuable contributions of several untranslated American authors and still too little known to the French public, in particular
the instruments of power of the 'dominant classes'. Hence also a rejection of the very idea of a standard, ousted on the sole ground that there are always exceptions: before individuals who are outside this ideal by insisting on their suffering as marginalized people ', notes the author in a fun manual for the use of' woke 'apprentices. But the success of such an explanatory model is also due to several exogenous parameters. It is on the one hand the emergence of new information and communication networks, which overvalue viral content, and therefore emotion and its almost inseparable corollary: indignation. On the other hand, the weakening of collective links and the emergence in reaction of a 'bureaucratization of social relations' allows, explains Pierre Valentin, to trivialize the recourse in the event of conflict to third-party arbitration. All against the backdrop of the victory of 'the logic of the victim' (whose status has become sacred) over that of honor (deemed obsolete): this is how the incessant search among militants 'woke' flourishes. new 'offenses' against which it is advisable to demand 'reparation' from the administration (first that of the universities, then of the large

Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay (who had already distinguished themselves by trapping certain academic journals with a tasty hoax). The architecture of the 'vvoke' system of thought rests on a few very simple foundations, but which, however questionable they may be, nonetheless give their followers a strong authority since they make it possible to cast suspicion on almost all of them. - all of our political certainties: knowledge, they believe, is less the result of a universal search for knowledge than of a struggle for power. Distinctions and hierarchies are therefore immediately suspect; and with them language and culture, accused at bottom of being
companies and increasingly that of States). Hence this psychological hypothesis: the proponents of 'wokism' are first of all the heirs of a generation of wealthy people who have tended to overprotect their children, those whom Shakespeare's language calls 'helicopter parents'. Relying this time on the observations of psychologist Jean Piaget, the author argues that 'among children of the well-to-do classes, the progressive erosion of the average time of their moments of free play would prevent the good development of the child. Who would keep, once a teenager and young adult, the need to settle his disagreements with his fellows by resorting to outside intervention, often from a formal authority '. By popularizing and making accessible to the French-speaking public many essential works on this phenomenon which does not stop shaking, sometimes violently, the intellectual life on each side of the Atlantic, Pierre Valentin is rendering an immense service to all those who wish deepen their understanding of - and even respond to - the fallacies of 'woke' thinking. Finally, he quite rightly observes that one of the best antidotes known to date remains humor, and it is important to note the recent success of many satirical accounts on social networks, which at least have the merit of emphasizing the poverty of the process. : Since, in fact, that any reference to any norm attests to a probable oppression, the extent of the possible indignation seems limitless. And there is an urgent need to close Pandora's box."

"Woke in its initial inception meant political consciousness for Black people about the histories of anti-Blackness in this [USA] country and globally rather than this kind of more generalised political consciousness that it came to take up. One thing that I think is a very common misunderstanding about woke is the idea that it was derived from this phrase 'stay woke'. Woke itself is a standalone word. It's a word that conforms to the syntactic and phonological, which is to say that the sound system and grammatical principles, of African American English which has its origins in the South. 'Awake' is synonymous with 'woke' right, so one might say, 'I was woke about, let's say 7am'. The idea of 'wakefulness' as a concept referring to political consciousness stretches as far back as 1923, and then we see it going all the way up through the 1980s. Marcus Garvey in 'The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey' in the frame of what we might think of as black nationalist tradition where he says, 'wake up Ethiopia, wake up Africa, let us work towards the one end of a glorious and redeemed and mighty nation', he's talking about political consciousness in the same way as Laurence Fishburne's character at the end of 'School Daze' in the 1980s film. In 1962, a New York Times article by a guy named [William] Melvin Kelley 'If You're Woke You Dig It' writing about cultural appropriation and linguistic appropriation of Black language and culture by white people, specifically. As early as the 1990s or the late 1980s, you see it more attached to the idea of 'political correctness'. This is the point of which white people I would suggest, begin using it reflexively. And so it doesn't now just have the meaning of thinking about anti-Blackness from the perspective of someone who experiences it. More now it refers to this more general sense of awareness, as a marker of general political consciousness attention to such issues as those environmental, feminists, regarding ability and so on. Childish Gambino's song 'Redbone', canonised the phrase 'stay woke' for a popular audience. While Childish Gambino might understand that 'wokeness', at least in its original inception, has a lot to do with our awareness of anti-Black oppression. Listeners to the song from a variety of demographics all over the world aren't abreast of that history and now are using it, the phrase, in a way that destroys its meaning. But it has also been taken up more recently by conservatives. And it became used in a negative or pejorative fashion, right or at least one that is mocking or sarcastic. In fact, it's a well-known and popular tactic of conservatives to pick up and shift the meanings of individual terms, to then weaponize them. Mark Milley and Matt Gaetz arguing about what's woke and what isn't, whether it's good or whether it's bad, where that has nothing to do with the case of the Scottsboro Boys or Emmett Till or Trayvon Martin or Sandra Bland or Rodney King or Ahmaud Arbery or Breonna Taylor or George Floyd. I'm not suggesting that it's necessarily a conscious process, but it's the result of the kind of consumption of Black culture, which has always had a lot of capital purchase in the United States and pop culture globally." And #WebsiteVoxAjaRomano: "Before 2014, the call to 'stay woke' was, for many people, unheard of. The idea behind it was common within Black communities at that point -- the notion that staying 'woke' and alert to the deceptions of other people was a basic survival tactic. But in 2014, following the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, 'stay woke' suddenly became the cautionary watchword of Black Lives Matter activists on the streets, used in a chilling and specific context : keeping watch for police brutality and unjust police tactics."
